The age-old question often comes up: should I lift weights, or will that make me bulky and slow down my running? Or, if I do both, will one cancel out the benefits of the other?

Good news! A recent study looked into exactly this, and the findings are super exciting for recreational runners like us. Researchers wanted to see how different types of training – just strength, just endurance, or a smart combination of both – affected performance and body shape in male recreational runners aged 30-40. Let's dive into what they found!

The Science-Backed Scoop: What Works Best?

The study followed 30 male recreational runners over 12 weeks, splitting them into three groups:

  1. The Strength Squad (RSSTG): This group focused solely on running-specific strength training, three times a week. Think squats, leg curls, and calf raises, getting progressively tougher over time.
  2. The Endurance Crew (ETG): These runners stuck to what they know, doing three endurance running sessions a week. Their training included fartlek, continuous running, and interval training.
  3. The All-Rounders (CTG): This group got the best of both worlds, alternating strength and endurance sessions on separate, non-consecutive days, three times a week total.

Here’s what the researchers discovered after 12 weeks:

  • Strength Training Alone (RSSTG): The Strength Squad became significantly more powerful and stronger! They saw big improvements in their Countermovement Jump (CMJ), which measures explosive power, and their 1RM Squat (how much weight they could lift for one squat). Crucially for runners, they also significantly improved their Running Economy (RE) at both 12 and 14 km/h. This means they became more efficient runners, using less energy to maintain a certain speed.
  • Endurance Training Alone (ETG): As expected, the Endurance Crew significantly boosted their classic endurance markers. They improved their VO2max (the maximum amount of oxygen their body could use) and their Anaerobic Threshold (AnT) (the point where lactic acid starts to build up quickly). They also saw a significant improvement in their Running Economy.
  • Concurrent Training (CTG) – The Best of Both Worlds!: This is where it gets really interesting! The All-Rounders group saw significant improvements across the board: in body fat percentage (BFP), lean mass (LM), CMJ, 1RM Squat, Running Economy (at both 12 and 14 km/h), VO2max, and Anaerobic Threshold. In simple terms, they got stronger, more powerful, fitter, and even improved their body composition (less fat, more muscle).

The big takeaway? The study found no interference effect! This means that doing both strength and endurance training, when structured correctly on non-consecutive days, did not cancel out the benefits of either type of training. In fact, the Concurrent Training group often saw benefits that were as good as, or even better than, the single-mode training groups in specific areas. For example, their improvements in explosive power (CMJ) and running economy at 14 km/h were significantly higher than the Endurance Training group's improvements. This suggests that concurrent training is the most time-efficient method to achieve both body composition and performance adaptations.

While the specifics of periodization can be complex, the core idea is to vary your training intensity and focus over time. This structured approach helps recreational endurance athletes improve their performance, especially when combining strength and endurance. Consider working with a coach to develop a well-structured plan that integrates both strength and endurance elements.

This study provides fantastic evidence that recreational runners can significantly improve their performance and even their body composition by strategically combining running-specific strength training and endurance training. The "interference effect" that some athletes worry about wasn't an issue with the training frequency used here (3 sessions per week, alternating strength and endurance on different days).

While this was a great study, it's worth noting a few things: it involved a smaller group of only male recreational runners, and the intervention lasted 12 weeks. Longer studies with more diverse groups could provide even more insights. But for now, the message is clear: don't be afraid to add strength to your running routine!
